Flutter is a typeface inspired by one of my earliest poems in English, which, though seemingly nonsensical, captured something deeply true about who I was at the time. Through this typeface, I aim to express the fleeting, ephemeral quality of a butterfly—much like the poem itself. It evokes the illegibility of a child’s writing, the feeling of grasping for something that slips away just as you reach for it. I’m interested in the legibility of language, especially as someone for whom English is not the first language, yet the one I speak most fluently. I wanted to explore when this switch happened, because while language enables conversation, it also replaces the sounds of your native tongue—in my case, Punjabi. Flutter is an ode to my younger self, through which I seek to capture those moments of transition in language, and the slippages and illegibilities that occur in those spaces.
